Lyla's big blue eyes were wide with curiosity as she continued reading the parenting book she had snagged from her parents' bookshelf. Lucas and Laura Hawthorne had always had their hands full with little Lyla Hawthorne, who was by far the most curious, intelligent and stubborn little girl they had ever come across. The young girl never understood why her parents kept so many books and TV shows away from her- if they sent her to school to learn, why should she have to stop when at home? More importantly, why on earth did all these weird things happen she became upset or angry? [break][break] Laura, a young, devout Christian was always perplexed and dumbfounded whenever the oddities occurred around her child. For example, when just last week, Lyla got in trouble in her pre-school for dumping glue onto another student, she received a call from the terrified young teacher, explaining what had happened and how after she had put Lyla into the time-out chair, the lights flickered and all the glue bottle in the class had burst. Honestly, Laura was concerned, so she decided she would discuss with her husband about possibly bringing their daughter into the church for "special services" to save her. [break][break] "What? I don't want to leave mummy..." her big blue eyes filled with tears as Lucas packed all of Lyla's things into a suitcase. "Mummy and daddy...we can't stay here together. We don't love each other anymore." Lucas tried to explain, still wearing his work suit as he rushed around the pink room, packing various objects. "But mummy loves me, right? I can stay and then wait for you to come back when it's all better." Lyla tried to reason as she attempted to put everything her father was packing back in its place in her room while his back was turned. "No no, sweetie, you have to come with Daddy. I'll take care of you." he attempted to smile, but Lyla saw the wet streaks on his face. Something was very wrong- Daddy never cried. [break][break] "I'll come." she said softly, now helping him pack her things. Mummy didn't seem as upset as Daddy did, so Lyla needed to take care of him. For a four year old, she was mature for her age and always held a sense of responsibility for her family, even she didn't need to. What she didn't know was that her father and her were not ordinary people like Laura Hawthorne. They were wizards who could do magic, and Laura was terrified and ultimately convinced that she married a lying sinner and spawned a sinner daughter. Laura had made up her mind that she did not want anything to do with them anymore. That was the end of their marriage, and the last time Lyla saw her mother. [break][break] Eight months had passed and a now five year old Lyla was handling the learning curve of the wizarding world very well. She learned that Daddy's mum, her grandmother Adelaide, was a Veela who lived in France from most her life, and she had two aunts, and uncle, and many cousins that lived in or around the huge home they lived in, called the Hawthorne Manor. Her family also really liked these big parties where a lot of people came and talked, danced, and ate all night, but Lyla wasn't allowed to go to these. She overheard her father and her grandmother speaking about her, and she heard her grandmother say something along the lines of "She still acts like a Muggle sometimes." When Lyla asked, she learned that people who couldn't do magic were called Muggle, but she didn't see what was so bad about them and why most of her family didn't like them. [break][break] However, at one of these parties, the first one she was allowed to attend and she met a very pretty French woman named Elle who seemed very nice... But Lyla instantly hated her when she learned that Elle was going to become her new mother in a month. Lyla was infuriated that her family, especially her father didn't tell her that he was marrying another lady and she was even more angry that he thought she could replaced her mother. What Lyla didn't know (once again) was that Adelaide was forcing the two to marry to attempt to salvage her son and keep the "pureblood" Hawthornes going...and that the reason her grandmother and later Elle didn't like Lyla was because she was considered less than them due to being a "half blood". [break][break] Two months after the wedding, Lyla again learned of big news: she was going to have two siblings. Lyla's anger against both Elle and Lucas increased, especially because now her own father was starting to treat her like how the rest of her family treated her. But the person who treated her the worse was her new mother- Elle. For some reason, Elle did what she could to make Lyla miserable in the smallest, more unnoticeable ways. She'd act nice in front of the family, like the perfect mother, but when the two were all alone, Elle would damage all of Lyla's prized toys and tell her how she would be disowned when she grew up for having Muggle blood in her veins. Lyla learned from this to develop a tough, resilient outer shell, because giving people the pleasure of seeing how hurt she was only made them happier and gave them more ammunition. For a five year old, Lyla was incredibly closed off and detached. [break][break] The twin sisters came along and despite not liking both Lucas and Elle, Lyla couldn't help but love her sisters. She often tried to play with them growing up, though as a five year old she didn't understand how to play with babies very well. As they grew up, Lyla became more and more protective of her sisters, as they were some of the only family that didn't resent her, and that she didn't hate. The twins, Mallory and Irene were polar opposites from the beginning. Mallory was always very quiet and gentle, and Irene was a wild child who seemed to hate her parents more than Lyla did. Lyla did her best to try to teach them all she knew, including how to not judge or follow in their family's brainless ways, hoping that she could help them break the Hawthorne pattern. Lucas was aloof and distant from everyone, including Lyla for some reason, and Elle became even colder as Lyla grew.[break][break] Lyla got her Hogwarts letter when she was eleven and the twins were six years old, there was a party held in her honor (she was and is still convinced it was to celebrate her not being a Squib as opposed to celebrating her acceptance into Hogwarts). Lyla had a dress picked out for her which to her dismay, had ribbons that needed to be tied behind her, and she just couldn't get them tied. Reluctantly, she walked across the manor to her parents' bedroom to ask for help. Her small knuckled tapped on the wooden door and it slowly opened, revealing Elle.[break][break] "Er...Elle would you tie my ribbons please?" she asked politely, not wanting Elle to spew out more of her usual coldhearted insults at her. "Sure thing, sweetheart." Elle replied in her thick French accent, leaning down to pick up the ribbons. "You honestly could have been so much more..." she said softly, crossing the ribbons over one another. "For a half-blood, you're so smart and pretty. But you were born a disgrace." she whispered into Lyla's ear from behind, tightening the ribbons to the point where Lyla could barely breathe. "Perhaps you looks will save you someday because you're worthless to this- my- family." she finished tying the ribbons, making Lyla feel like she was being cut in half. [break][break] "Too bad, you have such a pretty face but everything that comes out your mouth is uglier than the garden gnomes." Lyla shot back at her, her knuckled clenched. Elle looked shocked that Lyla for once fired back at her, and Elle slammed the door in her face. Lyla, already feeling lightheaded from not being able to breathe right from the constriction of her chest, called for the house-elves who fixed her up. Lesson learned: holding your tongue makes you look weaker than if you were to speak up, so that's what she did from then on. [break][break] Lyla was sorted into Ravenclaw, which worsened her relations at home. Her sisters sent her owls, telling her of the weird things they were hearing at home, like "Ravenclaws always go off the deep end" or "Ravenclaws are absolute lunatics". Lyla tried the best she could to teach her little sisters that the Houses were all equal and that Ravenclaws were considered "creative, intelligent and witty learners". Though most of her family at home already thought of her even less due to her being a Ravenclaw, the thing that kept them from disowning her was her intelligence. She excelled in all the classes she took which actually impressed her grandmother and kept her step mother's snide remarks and actions at bay. She even became increasingly interested in Quidditch and joined the team as a Beater when she was in her third year. [break][break] In Lyla's fifth year, her sisters joined her in Hogwarts and like most of her family, they were both sorted into Slytherin. They were Yin and Yang, Mallory being soft spoken and sweet, while Irene was already out of control. This was the year that Hogwarts was under the rule of the Carrows, and Lyla hated it profusely. At first she had refused to participate in her Dark Arts classes, but it soon became evident that blatantly refusing would only result in further physical and cruel discipline. To Lyla's dismay, she piped down (as much as it was a struggle for her) simply because she had to stay in school and out of the Room of Requirement to make sure she could protect her little sisters. During the Battle of Hogwarts, her first priority was to ensure her sisters would get to safety, and then she fought the best she could. She was fortunate to have not gotten seriously injured in the battle, though she did experience the Cruciatus Curse and suffer a nasty would from a hex. [break][break] One thing that she discovered after the Battle of Hogwarts was that her uncle and one of her aunts were both Death Eaters, though they were not very high up in the ranks. Her grandmother and Elle worked hard to persuade Ministry officials to not arrest and imprison them, creating a story that they were under the Imperius Curse. It somehow worked and everyone in the Hawthorne house returned to normal, as if nothing ever happened. However, Lyla knows the darkness of her family, from Elle's cruelness, the overall prejudice, the manipulation and the dark wizards living under her roof, and she is now determined to get her and her sisters out before she loses them to the notorious lifestyle of the Hawthornes. |
